Create and Manage Identities

Updated over 2 weeks ago

A Cloaked Identity is a private, reusable profile made up of a phone number, email address, username, and password that replaces your real personal information and helps keep it protected.

You use Cloaked Identities when signing up for websites, apps, or services anywhere you would normally share your phone number or email address. Messages and calls still reach you, but the service never sees your real details, helping reduce spam and limit exposure if a breach occurs.

Why Create a New Identity

Creating and sharing identities gives you more control over how you communicate online. Cloaked Identities help you:

  • Choose which companies or people receive your contact information

  • Reduce spam, robocalls, and marketing messages by isolating them within Cloaked

  • Protect your privacy by limiting how much of your personal data is shared or sold

  • Separate communications from different parts of your life, such as shopping, work, subscriptions, travel, or banking

Each identity is independent. If one starts receiving unwanted contact, you can mute notifications, regenerate contact details, or delete the identity entirely without affecting anything else.

Note: Muting an identity only silences notifications. It does not block senders or stop messages from being received. All communications will still appear inside Cloaked.

Creating an Identity in the Cloaked Mobile App

  1. Open the Cloaked mobile app and go to the Home tab.

  2. Under Generate New, tap Number.

  3. Cloaked generates a new phone number for the identity.

  4. Tap the + icon next to Email, Username, or Password to generate additional credentials.

  5. Give the identity a name so you can find it later.

Once created, you can open the identity to manage forwarding, notifications, and communication settings. When you’re finished adding information, tap Done (located near the “Your Identity” header) to return to the main view.

Creating an Identity in the Cloaked Dashboard (Desktop)

  1. Log in at my.cloaked.com.

  2. Click New Identity in the lower-left corner.

  3. Name the identity by typing your own label or choosing a suggested site.

  4. Click Generate next to any field you want to create, such as phone number, email, username, or password.

  5. Repeat as needed for additional credentials.

All generated details are saved automatically and sync across your devices.

Creating an Identity with the Browser Extension

The Cloaked browser extension lets you generate and autofill credentials directly on signup pages. You can also edit identity details from the extension.

  1. Make sure you’re logged in to the Cloaked browser extension.

  2. Click into a signup field such as email, password, username, or phone number.

  3. When the Cloaked logo appears, choose Generate.

  4. Review the generated details and click Save.

The identity is created instantly and stored in your Cloaked account. When you return to the site later, Cloaked can autofill your saved login details.

What Happens After You Create an Identity

Once an identity is created:

  • Emails sent to a Cloaked address are received by Cloaked and can be forwarded to you

  • Calls and texts sent to Cloaked phone numbers reach you based on your forwarding settings

  • Login credentials are stored securely and available across devices

  • You can rename, mute notifications, regenerate details, or delete the identity at any time

Emails and text messages appear in the Cloaked inbox. Phone calls appear in call activity and call history rather than as inbox messages.

Managing Identity Communication and Forwarding

Forwarding controls whether communications sent to your Cloaked identities stay inside Cloaked or are delivered to your personal email address or phone number.

Forwarding is managed at two levels:

  • Account-level forwarding, which defines the default forwarding destinations available on your account

  • Identity-level forwarding, which controls whether a specific identity forwards messages

Identities work even if forwarding is disabled.

  • Phone calls require forwarding to ring your personal phone

  • Emails and texts do not require forwarding and will still appear inside Cloaked

If forwarding is disabled, communications remain accessible inside the Cloaked app or dashboard. You can also control notifications separately for each identity.

Cloaked does not require approving individual senders by default. However, you can restrict an identity so that only approved contacts are allowed to reach it. When enabled, this requires you to explicitly approve contacts for that identity.

Replacing Identity Details

Replacing identity details lets you regenerate contact information without deleting the identity.

Replacing Identity Details from the Cloaked Dashboard

  1. Log in at my.cloaked.com.

  2. Locate the identity from Recent Identities or the All Identities list.

  3. Click the identity to open it.

  4. Hover over the detail you want to replace.

  5. Click the three-dot menu and select Delete.

  6. Hover over the empty field and click Generate to create a new value.

The deleted detail stops functioning immediately. If needed, it can be restored from the Trash within 30 days. The newly generated detail becomes active, and all other identity information remains unchanged.

Replacing Identity Details from the Cloaked Mobile App

  1. Open the Cloaked app.

  2. Navigate to Home or Identities and select the identity.

  3. Tap the detail you want to replace.

  4. Tap Delete.

  5. Tap Add more near the “Your Identity” section.

  6. Use the + icon to generate a new value.

Deleting an Identity from the Cloaked Dashboard

You can delete identities from either the Home view or the Identities page:

  • From Home, open a recent identity and click the trash icon

  • From Identities, select one or more identities using the checkbox and click Delete, or open an identity and use the trash icon

Identity deletion is immediate. Deleted identities may be recoverable for a limited time through support. Deleting one identity does not affect others in your account.

Deleting an Identity from the Cloaked Mobile App

  • From Identities, tap the three-dot menu next to an identity or open it and delete

Sharing a Cloaked Identity Securely

You can securely share an identity when someone else needs access to an account or service you manage.

You control:

  • Which fields are shared

  • How long the link is active

  • Whether a password is required

Sharing an identity does not grant access to your Cloaked account or inbox. It only shares the specific details you choose, similar to sharing a contact.

Sharing from the Desktop Dashboard

  1. Open the identity.

  2. Click the share icon.

  3. Choose full or custom permissions.

  4. Create the link, set expiration and password, and share.

Sharing from the Mobile App

  1. Open the identity.

  2. Tap the share icon.

  3. Select permissions, generate the link, and share.

You can revoke shared access at any time. Sharing does not prevent you from editing, regenerating, or deleting the identity later.

Why Using Multiple Identities Matters

Using a single alias everywhere provides less privacy and control than using multiple identities.

When the same contact details are reused:

  • Activity can be cross-referenced across services

  • Data breaches expose more of your digital life at once

  • Spam becomes harder to trace

  • Fixing issues often disrupts multiple accounts

Cloaked is designed so each service can have its own identity. This isolation makes issues easier to identify and resolve without affecting the rest of your digital life.

About one-time passcodes (TOTP)

Some identities in Cloaked use time-based one-time passcodes (TOTP) as an additional security measure.

What to know:

  • TOTP codes automatically synchronize across all devices where you use Cloaked

  • A countdown timer shows how long the current code remains valid

  • TOTP settings can be managed directly from the identity details page

Managing TOTP on an identity

From the identity details page, you can:

  • View the current TOTP code

  • See the countdown timer

  • Remove or re-add TOTP as needed

Changes take effect immediately and stay synchronized across devices.
