Setting up Cloaked eSIM

Updated over a week ago

A Cloaked eSIM is a carrier-backed phone number delivered through an embedded SIM (eSIM) instead of a physical SIM card.

An eSIM is built directly into your device and activated digitally. It connects to a mobile carrier network just like a traditional SIM card and does not rely on internet-based (VoIP) routing.

From a technical standpoint, a Cloaked eSIM:

  • Is a real cellular phone line

  • Has its own phone number

  • Can make and receive calls and texts

  • Uses carrier networks rather than VoIP

Functionally, it behaves the same as a standard mobile phone number.

How Cloaked eSIM Differs From Standard Cloaked Numbers

Most Cloaked-generated phone numbers are virtual (VoIP-based). These work well for everyday use but may be rejected by some services that require carrier-verified numbers.

A Cloaked eSIM provides a carrier-backed number, which allows it to be used with services that block VoIP numbers, such as:

  • Certain banks and financial institutions

  • Insurance providers

  • Some verification or authentication systems

Both options protect your personal phone number. The difference is how the number is delivered and how third-party services classify it.

When a Cloaked eSIM Is Useful

A Cloaked eSIM may be a good option if you:

  • Need a Cloaked number that works with services that block VoIP

  • Want a second phone number without carrying a second device

  • Need a carrier-backed number for account verification

  • Want to use iMessage with a Cloaked number on iPhone

Many users continue to use standard Cloaked numbers for most signups and reserve a Cloaked eSIM only for situations that require a traditional cellular number.

Device Requirements

To use a Cloaked eSIM:

  • Your device must support eSIM

  • Your device must be unlocked

  • You must have an available eSIM slot

No additional hardware is required. Installation is completed through the Cloaked app or dashboard and typically takes only a few minutes.

Using Cloaked eSIM on Your Phone

Once installed, the Cloaked eSIM appears as an additional line on your device.

You can:

  • Switch between your personal number and Cloaked eSIM

  • Choose which number to use for calls and texts

  • Keep communications separated at the device level

On iPhone, Cloaked eSIM can be enabled for iMessage through iOS settings.

Voicemail is enabled by default for all Cloaked eSIM users.

The voicemail PIN is the last four digits of your Cloaked eSIM phone number.

Technical Details

  • Carrier Network

Cloaked eSIM is powered by T-Mobile’s network.

  • Supported Devices

Device compatibility depends on your hardware and carrier configuration. Some devices may not support dual eSIMs.

If your current carrier uses your device’s only eSIM slot, a SIM swap may be required.

Troubleshooting

Device Not Compatible

If you see a compatibility error:

  • Confirm your device is unlocked

  • Confirm you have an available eSIM slot

Some carriers install their SIM by default into the eSIM slot. In this case, contact your carrier to request a SIM swap.

Carrier-Locked Devices

Carrier-locked devices cannot install Cloaked eSIM. Contact your carrier to unlock the device.

eSIM Slot Already in Use

If your current carrier uses an eSIM (for example, Google Fi), you may need to switch your carrier SIM to a physical SIM before installing Cloaked eSIM.

Cloaked does not currently offer a physical SIM option.
